Our Christmas party is just around the next corner! We’ll be having a short discussion of our Wooster and Jeeves book before the party on Friday December 4th. Mark your calenders now, the holiday’s get busy fast. We had a GREAT turnout last year and TONS of fun! We’ll definitely be playing another round of Telephone Pictonary!

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas – February

Muslims Christians and Jesus by Carl Medearis – April

Next meeting

October is RIGHT around the corner! Have you started The Hound of the Baskervilles yet? If so, what do you think?! It was hard for me to put down! And I’ll admit I wasn’t sure “who dun it” until it was revealed. 🙂 But I’m not sure I had full brain cell power while reading it… I finished it the day before Lydia was born! 🙂

Our meeting to discuss is going to be
October 19th at 7:00pm

location TBD… If anyone has a suggestion of a location or would like to host let me know.

For those like me who like to know what’s coming up, here are the next few books planned… (or if you’d like to PBSwap/Bookmooch them!)

The Code of the Woosters by P.G. Wodehouse for December (this will probably be in early December, the same time as our Christmas Party!)

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas for February

Muslims Christians and Jesus by Carl Medearis for April

feeling sleuth-like?

As you have heard, October’s book is The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is staring the great detective Sherlock Holmes (and of course his trusty sidekick Dr. Watson!)

Do you have a copy of the book yet? Amazon has it new for only $4.95 right now. And as low as $1.44 used!

After you track down the book, here’s a helpful tool to help you figure out who dun-it.

It might be a good thing to fold and keep as a bookmark. You can use it to keep track of clues and suspects. Remembering that nothing has been put in this story on accident, clues could be everywhere.

(I found the detective log on Masterpiece Theater’s site.)

“Now is the dramatic moment of fate, when you hear a step upon the stair
which is walking into your life, and you know not whether for good or ill.”
— Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles

October’s book

We were small in numbers for our meeting on Monday, but it was a good time of muffins, iced mango tea and of course talk of Asher Lev!

If you couldn’t make it and still like to hear some discussion on it head over to Midday Connections Book Club site. They read the book back in November of 07 and you can still access the audio archives for it and hear the broadcast.

Our next book for October is The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. If you aren’t familiar with this author… maybe Sherlock Holmes will ring a bell! It’s a mystery featuring the one and only Holmes and Dr Watson.

Amazon currently has it for $3.99! Buy it now for some fun detective Fall reading!

I hope you can find some time to read this one and we’ll see you in October!!
Happy Reading,
Sarah

My Name is Asher Lev.

Why do you read? Sometimes I read to be entertained. Sometimes I read because I should. Sometimes I read because I want to think. Or, rather, I want to be thought-full. To me, great books are ones that both entertain and teach. The best kind of teaching comes from books. This is not the kind of teaching that tells you, “two plus two is four.” What great books offer is an opportunity for your mind to envelop a thought, idea, or perspective and chew on it for awhile. Your brain picks up tidbits of story and puts them together to form knowledge. A good book gives this to you, and you hardly even notice because you’re distracted by the story.

My Name is Asher Lev is one such great book.

My biggest complaint about many of the books I had to read in high school is that they were AWFUL. This isn’t to say that the writing was bad, but that they were filled with stories of horrible things. Asher Lev is my big “I told you so!” to high school literature.* The story isn’t fanciful and full of hearts and flowers- bad things do happen. The story isn’t comprised of events, but of a character’s thoughts, feelings and observations. Events, both good and bad, shape the main character, Asher Lev, as the book follows him from a young age through to adulthood. The author, Chaim Potok, doesn’t tell you what to think, but rather gives you space to ponder. And he leaves you wondering, too. While the book concludes, it is the first of a series of books about the gifted Asher Lev of Brooklyn. A practicing Jew who painted a crucifixion.

So, I hope you read it. I hope you ponder. Life. Art. Relationships. Family. Value. Community. Whatever your mind latches onto within the words that Chaim Potok so thoughtfully placed together.

*I guess there were a few books I liked in high school. My teachers were excellent. I just prefer not to read about some things. I won’t go into details because I’m sure you had to read them, too 😀

Lamplighter Building Character

“you don’t want to get rid of the TV unless you’ve got something better to substitute it”

This quote came from an interview I heard on Revive our Hearts. They just had a two part program with the founder and president of Lamplighter Publishing, Mark Hamby. DEFINITELY worth taking some time to listen to… (or reading the transcript)

Day 1’s broadcast & transcript
Day 2’s broadcast / transcript

If you don’t have time read or listen now go grab podcast (for free) and listen to it later. I’m not sure how long they keep their programs available to download.

I already consider myself a bookworm, but after hearing these two broadcast I think I’ve moved to a deeper love of books… and reading… and reading aloud… and everything in between… and everything good that comes from all that!!!

When I taught preschool 3 year olds most days our reading time would be at least 30 minutes (straight!) And they usually asked for more! I thought that was pretty good, but now my son at just 21 months will sit on my lap (yes, for now, he still fits) for a whole hour reading books. Sometimes the same ones many times in a row, but I don’t mind. 🙂 I’m so glad he shares my love of reading!

This morning he came upstairs to his room, got his Bible, crawled in the chair and began looking through all the pages. After a few minutes he came and got me and asked me to read it to him. (Well, he actually came to me and said “B! B! B!” which is his way of saying READ!) 🙂

Ok, enough about me, I meant to be writing about Lamplighter!

Their site is SOOO worth checking out! Especially if you are a book lover!

The mission of Lamplighter Ministries is “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord, by building Christ-like character one story at a time.” The mission of this ministry is deeply rooted in the truths found in Malachi 4:6 and Luke 1:17.

I love that these books aren’t just for children. In the broadcast they mention a 12 yr old girl who read and loved one of the books and gave it to her grandfather, who also loved it and then bought 2 copies for his siblings!

Here’s another excerpt from their site…

Lamplighter books are edited within a Biblical theological framework to ensure that each story reflects the character of God and provides key Scriptures to be stored within the heart. The uniqueness of a Lamplighter book in contrast to other books with the same title is that they have been enhanced with helpful footnotes and woven with threads of Biblical truths that will be etched into an awakened moral conscience. These characteristics are what make our Lamplighter Collection so unique and highly valued.

Now, doesn’t that just make you want to get one of these books?!! There’s just something about those old classic stories! Some of the books they publish are ones that have been out of print for a long time!

Revive our Hearts is, for a few more days, giving away one of their books The Basket of Flowers, when you send in a donation.

I don’t think I’m a true bibliophile, but there is something that just gets me about how nice these books look and the quality of what’s inside! If I had the money I’d sign up for The Oliver level book club and get them all!

My Name Is Asher Lev

This is our next book club read. You still have plenty of time to track down a copy of the book and read it before our July 25th discussion.

I’ll have to admit I haven’t started this book yet. (GASP! I know!) I try to be one book ahead or have at least read it sometime in the past. But not to worry. I have several trusted sources who tell me it’s a great one! If you’ve read it please feel free to leave some comments. I’d love to hear what you think of it! I do know Asher Lev is from a Hasidic Jewish family in 1940s in Brooklyn. Sure sounds intriguing to me!

I hope you all are enjoying the club! These books shouldn’t feel like assignments for school. (Although this particular book is often required reading for school.) If you have time to read and join us for the discussion, that’s great! But if you can’t make it or a certain book doesn’t strike your fancy, no worries. Maybe the next one will! Or better yet, let me know the type of books your interested in! There might be others interested in the same kind!

I haven’t got many surveys back, but I will probably slow the books down and not have one-month-books so often. If you haven’t responded to the survey questions, please take time to let me know your thoughts!

If you have friends or family who you think would be interested in joining us, invite them! This isn’t a closed club, any are welcome!

I am interested to hear who is planning on reading this book. Please leave a comment or send me an email. I’m hoping to start reading this week! I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.

June’s book

Summer is just about here so I’m sure that means very busy schedules for most of you! Don’t forget to order or go find a copy of Susanna Wesley: The Mother of John & Charles Wesley by Arnold A. Dallimore Right now you can get used copies for just 25 cents!

You’ll want to read about this lady! The youngest of 25 children and having 19 of her own will prove to be a good read! Our books are intertwining a bit… as a student, Daniel Defoe (the author of Robinson Crusoe) visited her husband, Samuel.

Happy Reading!
