Robinson Crusoe discussion questions

Here are a few questions I found for our meeting next month. I thought I’d send them out early so you can be thinking about then ahead of time.

1. Is Robinson Crusoe moving or too factual and realistic or both?
2. What techniques does the author use to make it moving? (shipwreck, footprint, cannibalism) Look at how he shows instead of telling.
3. Do women find it interesting? Why or why not?
4. Discuss the theological themes in the book. Providence, Conversion, Sanctification
5. What is sin in Robinson Crusoe? Before his conversion? After his conversion?
6. How does God Guide in Robinson Crusoe? Pay special attention to β€œsecret hints.”
7. Trace, using the text, Robinson Crusoe’s process of conversion and sanctification.
9. What virtues does Robinson Crusoe learn? How does he learn them? (diligence, obedience, tolerance, gratitude, self-control, sensibility, wisdom)
9. What Biblical allusions do you see in the text?
10. Discuss the role of fear in the book.
11. Discuss the book as an evangelistic work.
12. Look at what he took with him when he left the island and its possible significance.

January outing

In January the (new and fancy) downtown library is having a book sale on Saturday the 24rd. Leave a comment and let me know if you are interested in going! Then we can plan the day (or part of a day.) I think it will be a fun ladies day out!! We can do coffee before or lunch after or something else. Let me know your suggestions too!

Thanks!
Sarah

party re-cap and other info

Here are a few shots Janet got throughout the evening….

Thank you all so much for coming last night! I had a wonderful time and hope you did too! Telephone-Pictionary turned out to be a great hit! For those that weren’t able to make it, don’t worry I think we should play that one again!! I can’t remember the last time I laughed that much or that hard! seriously! πŸ™‚

I have several ideas for more fun get-togethers in 09! I actually have a list of many different kinds of activities we could do this coming year, so stay tuned! I might even throw in some “1 month” books instead of taking two months to read.

Some of you mentioned you don’t always know when I post here… so here are some options to be sure you never miss an entry.

1. You can use the igoogle home page and sign up for this site via an RSS feed. (This isn’t as complicated as it may sound. I can give you more detailed instructions if you need them.)

2. Google Reader -similar to #1 but this doesn’t have any fancy widget options, just RSS feeds.

3. Email updates -I can add your email so your are automatically sent an email anytime I post. (This is an easy options but I have a limit of 10 ppl that I can add to receive emails.)

The Rest of God -Restoring your Soul while Restoring the Sabbath

I still have 2 chapters to go, but this has been an awesome and informative book! If haven’t had the chance to read it yet I would really recommend it. Especially during this busy time of year! In the introduction Buchanan states that in this book he’s trying to “help us think differently about time and eternity, rest and work, food and play –to change and renew our minds about such things.”

I bought my copy of the book and a few ppl have already asked to borrow it, so let me know if you are also interested.

February’s book is Robinson Crusoe… more to come on this soon.

Book Game

My friend gave me this book tonight… but with conditions…

After I read it, I write my name, city and state and date that I read it.
Then I must give to to someone else to read.
Who knows where the book will travel or even how many years it might get passed around!

I thought this was a fantastic idea!!! I like all things book related anyway! Why wouldn’t I love this?!! Maybe we can do this with our book club. Each pick a book, maybe even one we already own (and wouldn’t mind giving to the game) and start passing them around! It doesn’t even have to just be with the others in our club, although it could start there. I’m going to look into a website that we could write in the books so those who get the book can log their name and location and we can see where they travel! (I’m sure we aren’t the first to do this, maybe a website already exists!)

Let me know your thoughts on the game!

Christmas Party

The Christmas Party is fast approaching!! It’s next Thursday the 11th. I realize this time of the year there are many things going on so if you aren’t able to get the book read, still come to the party!! πŸ™‚ The party starts at 7:30. Come at 7:00 if you’d like to discuss The Rest of God. It will be a short discussion… maybe too short πŸ™‚ I’ve gotten a good ways into it and it’s GREAT!

Please RSVP if you are able to come and let me know if you are bringing a friend. Friends are, of course, welcome!

(I’d like to get a group picture, so help me remember! Thanks!)

Book related websites

I found these two sites recently and thought I’d share!

The first one is GoodReads.com. This link will send you to my bookshelf. I can’t remember how I got to this site, but it’s a great one to sort/organize the books you’ve read, are reading, and plan to read. It says on their page that they can help you..

  • See what your friends are reading.
  • Keep track of what you’ve read and what you’d like to read.
  • Get great book recommendations from people you know.
  • Answer book trivia and collect your favorite quotes.

I would like to spend some time updating my bookshelf with some of those great books I’ve read. Maybe even write reviews on them! It seems like the perfect way to keep all that info in one place. (Plus, I’d like to see just exactly how many book I read in a year! haha!) One of my favorite features is the “compare prices” option. It’s very helpful if you plan to buy a book and not go through paperbackswap.com or bookmooch.com. (I haven’t gotten set up on either of these yet, so if you have, and have a second to comment on how you like them that would be helpful!)

The second site is LibraryThing.com It’s a free personal library catalog system! I found it b/c I was looking for a way to organize and tag all of Aaron’s books. The Preschool/Daycare where I used to work threw me a book baby shower so he has already accumulated quite the library! Here’s a link for a very short introduction to librarything.

(I’d secretly would LOVE to be a librarian! How fun is it that my mother-in-law is one?!! When we took those test in HS to see what job you’d be best at, I used to be embarrassed that mine came up “Librarian”, haha -not anymore!! I think they were RIGHT on!)

Anyway… I can sort all Aaron’s book’s so if we are going to read about ducks, or numbers, or opposites I can have all them tagged accordingly and find exactly which ones to read! Once I finish all of Aaron’s books I’ll see if it would be helpful to do mine also. But so far, I like what I have set up on GoodReads.

Another feature I like about LibraryThing is the wishlist option. It looks like you’d create a wishlist through Amazon. It says it takes some tweaking to get it, but the whole site is still in beta…. so maybe once they go real it will be more simple to do. But with this option, I can keep all the books listed that I’d like to get for Aaron in one place!

Let me know if you like either one of these site. I have no friends on GoodReads yet, so let me know if you join!! πŸ™‚

meeting location for Persuasion

I can’t believe November 15th is approaching so fast! If you are still working on finishing the book Persuasion you can listen to it here for free! (it also has the text)

This meeting will be at my friend Jodi’s house. Email me if you need directions or want to carpool. Everything will be the same, just a new location. 10:00 am, bring your favorite brunch item. πŸ™‚

Looking ahead to November…and beyond…

November 15th at 10:00am will be our next meeting for Persuasion. (location to be determined)

In December we are going to have our Christmas party! We need to start looking at dates for that… before things get too busy! (suggestions anyone??) Think of people you’d like to invite! It’d be a great chance for them to come for the first time and see what it’s all about.

Then the next meeting after that won’t be until February. We’ll adjust our every-other month schedule because of the holidays. I’ll reveal that book at our Christmas party. (unless you just can’t take the suspense and want to get started on it early!!) πŸ™‚

November’s book

This morning, over a very yummy brunch, we discussed Monday the Rabbi Took Off. It was a fun mystery that took place in Israel soon after the 6 day war. It made me a lot more interested in learning about Israel and its history! Not to mention keeping up with the news and goings-on over there. It also made me a tad jealous of the rabbi for getting to take a 3 month sabbatical!

In November we’ll meet and discuss our next book: Persuasion by the popular English novelist Jane Austen.

(date and location of our next meeting to be determined, it might be a bit cold for the park)
